Dr. Brent Bauer

Conventional medicine is great at fixing broken things – and I think we are all grateful that such amazing care is available when a loved one needs it. But we paid a price for the high tech approach that gave us so many wonderful advances.
I have found ISPA to be a leader in helping reclaim the voice of spa as an integral part of wellness.

Director of Research for the Integrative Medicine Program, Mayo Clinic

Medical Advisor, ISPA

ISPA’s medical advisor, Dr. Brent Bauer also serves as Director of Research for the Integrative Medicine Program at the Mayo Clinic. This grill-master has recently learned how to assess dog stress levels using infrared cameras (he is collaborating on a dog-human research project with Purina). His favorite quote is the Italian Proverb, “After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.”

“Conventional medicine is great at fixing broken things – and I think we are all grateful that such amazing care is available when a loved one needs it. But we paid a price for the high tech approach that gave us so many wonderful advances.

Integrative medicine is allowing us to capture some of the heart of medicine again, and putting the patient back at the center of care.  As the science around integrative medicine grows and shows the value of e.g. massage, meditation acupuncture, aromatherapy, etc., doctors and other conventional providers are increasingly incorporating such therapies into their prescriptions for wellness.  But patients/consumers don’t want to go to a medical environment for these things – once they are instructed in their value by the medical community, they should next turn to the spa in their community to help establish these therapies as part of their ongoing health and wellness promoting strategy.

I have found ISPA to be a leader in helping reclaim the voice of spa as an integral part of wellness and hence my strong commitment to ISPA and the ISPA community.”
