I loved studying international law but I wanted to make a difference and help people reach their personal and professional goals.

The compassion of the spa industry is one of this industry’s defining characteristics. It runs through the people of spa (and through People of ISPA), and for many of us it’s a daily source of inspiration. For Dany Brind’Amour, Director of International Trade Marketing at [ comfort zone ] Skincare, that compassion is not only what he loves about the industry, it’s also what has driven him to look beyond it.

Before settling on a career in spa, Dany studied law and business at Laval University, arguably one of the world’s most prestigious yet little-known universities. “For French-Canadians it’s our Harvard. I loved studying international law but the idea of actually practicing law… let’s just say it probably isn’t well suited to my personality! I’m a passionate person and wanted to ‘make a difference’ and I realized that my skills would be more beneficial in helping people reach their personal and professional goals. During my time in law school, I met many international students and their presence and more importantly their varied cultural experiences really expanded my ideas of the world and how I might make an impact on it.”

Dany ended up in spa, like so many of us, almost by accident. “Having worked as a lab technician during university, I accepted a position with a Canadian pharmaceutical/skin care company who were looking for someone with pharmaceutical experience, and I had just enough. It was an unexpected way into skincare.”  He was instantly inspired by the passion of the people he came across - and happy that his education wasn’t entirely wasted! “I love that spa is a unique combination of emotion and love, business and profitability. That combination is what fascinates me about this amazing industry.”

As a curious individual, Dany has a wide range of passions, both in the spa industry as well as outside the industry and he always attacks his passions with fervor and determination. Dany’s most recent venture outside the spa industry is very personal one: a memorial for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting, allowing people to share words of love and hope with families of the victims. “The Colorful Souls Project focuses on cultural and sexual diversity. Right now it’s totally self-funded, but I'm hoping to find volunteers to help me to turn it into a real non-profit soon.”

The Colorful Souls Project got off to an unorthodox start, with Dany running an ultramarathon in the Nevada desert. “It was a 31 miles race at the Burning Man festival, a great way to promote emotional healing in front of 80,000 people. I carried the rainbow flag for 50 kilometers and got an amazing reception from the attendees. I’m planning on running more ultramarathons in the future, maybe as many as three next year alone.”

Dany is living his travel dreams through spa as well, dreams that started when he came into contact with so many foreign students at Laval and continues with his recent move to Parma, Italy. “I travel about two thirds of my time, and I wish more people were exposed to different cultures and knew how other people lived. It would make the world a more peaceful place, I am sure.”
