After opening that first spa, I loved the mind-body nature of the offering and the fact that I was spending my career learning how to take care of people.
I love working in an industry that is all about taking care of people.

Group Director of Spa & Wellness, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group

Jeremy McCarthy is the Group Director of Spa & Wellness for Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, residing in Hong Kong. As an avid swimmer and surfer, he recently completed the Shek O Challenge, a 2.2km open water swimming race in Hong Kong. Jeremy teaches a course in positive leadership, has a blog on the psychology of wellbeing, and holds two black belts in Tang Soo Do and Hapkido.

“I began my career as a lifeguard at Four Seasons Santa Barbara, eventually becoming the pool supervisor and then recreation manager for the resort. The hotel then decided to add a small spa in my department. I didn’t know anything about the spa business, but the spa included a small fitness center which I was very excited about. With my background as a personal trainer, swim coach, and triathlete, I was looking to establish a career in fitness.

After opening that first spa, I loved the mind-body nature of the offering and the fact that I was spending my career learning how to take care of people. This seemed like a very valuable skill, regardless of what industry I might eventually end up in. After mentioning to one of the vice presidents of Four Seasons that I was interested in being their ‘spa guy’ and pursuing this as a career, he told me ‘if you want a career in hotels you have to work in either rooms or food and beverage.’ I wasn’t interested in either, so I decided to keep doing spas until something better came along. I ended up spending the next 14 years opening and operating spas for Four Seasons and have been in the industry now for more than 25 years.”
