“Wellness is my passion and my assignment. We all have an assignment; some spend their lives trying to figure it out. I am so thankful I discovered mine at an early age.”
"For me, it was very different. It wasn’t my imagination at all. I knew I would be a massage therapist like I knew how to spell my name.”

Dwan Elani remembers a transformational moment in her life. She was watching TV and the show featured a massage therapist. She was only in third grade.

Intrigued with the movements of the massage therapist, she thought, “I want to do that!”

“It was weird because at that stage in life, your imagination is full throttle with ideas of careers,” Elani says. “You know the typical things like doctor, police officer, firefighter, etc.

“For me, it was very different. It wasn’t my imagination at all. I knew I would be a massage therapist like I knew how to spell my name.”

Ever since, Elani has followed her childhood dream in Albany, Ga., which is where she was born and raised and later graduated from Albany State University. Now in her 11th year in the spa industry, Elani is a licensed massage therapist, wellness coach, spa developer and consultant at DwanElani LLC.

Her dream has evolved from just being a massage therapist to someone who advocates for total wellness. After being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 2009, Elani decided to dive deeper. She learned from her studies in massage school that the body reacts to everything – from the food you eat, to the environment you live in, to past emotional trauma. So she looked at wellness from a comprehensive aspect and learned that the disease was a physical response to emotional trauma from earlier in her life.

After having surgery in 2013, Elani made total wellness her lifestyle and scaled her career to include more wellness aspects than just massage.

When she’s not running her business, Elani spends time volunteering with Black Lives Matter, civil rights groups, LGBTQ groups and women’s groups. She enjoys reading luxury life magazines, traveling and swimming. Her proudest moment is raising her 14-year-old daughter, Angel. Their daily dance battles are the best part of Elani’s day.

Each day, Elani enjoys waking up and getting to do the job she has always wanted and in the place she grew up.

“Wellness is my passion and my assignment,” Elani says. “We all have an assignment; some spend their lives trying to figure it out. I am so thankful I discovered mine at an early age.”
