John Korpi, now happily retired, worked over 27 years in the spa industry, serving as both ISPA Chairman and ISPA Foundation Chairman over his career.  John was a pioneering figure for the International SPA Association’s development, and has helped lead the Association to where it stands today, especially when it comes to education.

“There are so many memories over the past 27 years; the passionate discussions and debates at early board meetings, my meeting with Alex Szekely at the Golden Door in 1992, when he agreed to take a very active role in the infant spa association and even agreed to follow me as ISPA President, presenting to the World Congress of Hydrologist in 1992 at request of the Italian government, our first Conference when ISPA was no longer a volunteer organization in 1993, our first Conference in Las Vegas in 1997 and a number of others.

My headline memory, of course was the discovery of Karen Antenucci as our professional lives kept intersecting at various ISPA events, dating all the way back to the initial enclave at New Age through the next several conferences, until I finally beat down her resistance making her my life partner and soul mate leading to our current 25-year marriage.”

When asked about his greatest contribution to the spa industry, John replied, “That one is easy. As President of the ISPA Foundation I was very fortunate to find myself in the positon to spend part of every day, and the majority of most days, studying and developing the content over six years to spearhead the process of creating a number of ISPA educational resource textbooks.  Textbooks beginning with a “Supervisory Skill Builder’s Program,” “A Comprehensive Introduction to Spa Management,” “The Uniform System of Financial Management for Spas,” “Retail Management,” and “A Compensation Workbook.”

John saw many major changes in the industry during his career. “The change I am so pleased with is the significant emphasis on research. From annual research studies to the monthly Snapshot Surveys, all of it generates significant data that supports financial and programing decisions by ownership groups and spa leadership.”

For us here at ISPA, we know that without John, our Association would not be where it is today. For that, we say thank you!
